If you accept the drivel that comes out of Fox, MSNBC, and CNN, then you are either completely unaware of libertarians (and I'm not talking specifically about the party) or are under the assumption that we are tin-foil hat wearing, white supremacist lunatics. Allow me, if you will, to set the record straight. Libertarians include those who are registered under the party of the same name, but also includes constitutionalists, conservatives, liberals, and even (to a limited degree) anarchists. We are atheists, Christians, Muslims, Jews, Buddhists, Hindus, pagans, etc. We are not just white, but all races are also represented. And while some of us are (unfortunately) lunatic fringe, most of us are normal. After, all political movements contain their nutcases and bad apples. It is just unfortunate that the media portrays libertarians as being nothing but a horde of madmen. Or we are completely ignored.
Take for example this weekend's straw poll in Ames, IA. Ron Paul, who while is registered and running as a republican, is a libertarian at heart, is completely and purposely ignored. This was pointed out on tonight's August 15th, 2011 episode of the daily show. Mr. Paul finished in second place, being edged out by the "Queen Of Rage" Michele Bachman by a mere 200 votes. Oddly enough, none of the major news networks mentioned his name. All they could talk about was Mitt Romney. So why is there this consorted effort to erase libertarians not just from the political landscape, but from the matrix of current events entirely?
I believe it is quite simply fear. Fear on behalf of the establishment. Libertarianism is solely based on logic and reason, something the American political system stands firmly against. Not to mention that libertarian see Washington for what it is: a corrupt autocracy. Just as the medieval Catholic church did, so does our contemporary media/political complex: suppress and censor anything blasphemous.
